Emotional reasoning

With emotional reasoning we believe that our emotions are true. We think that they are facts. Emotional reasoning is like looking through sunglasses on a sunny day and believing that everything is dark.

A classic example is a person with a phobia of flying, who then believes that flying is dangerous.

Someone with anxiety, who feel scared all the time, thinks that the world is an unsafe place.

Someone who has been let down in a relationship and feels very upset reasons that relationships are a waste of time.

Emotional reasoning is something that is so easy to do.

When we are feeling really happy often the world seems to be a great place full of friendly people.

When we’re anxious and feeling low often the world does not seem such a great place and people don’t seem as friendly.

Are your emotions getting in the way of seeing things as they really are and causing you to feel bad?
