With 'all or nothing thinking' we are choosing to put things in categories.
We think we are right, but often because we feel bad we have lost our perspective.
Instead of thinking 'all or nothing', things are usually somewhere in between.
This thinking is more realistic. It is more accepting of how things are.
Instead of
'I hate this anxiety. My life is absolutely terrible'. I'm always going to be like this. I'll never get over this problem'.
'This anxiety may feel awful now but it will pass. I have so many ways to overcome this problem. Life will soon be good again'.
Instead of
Someone working on a project, makes a mistake and thinks
'The project is ruined. It will be a failure'.
Just think
'I've made a mistake. Ok. What can I learn from this mistake, to avoid other mistakes and make the project successful'.
Instead of
Someone on a diet, eats some fatty foods, and thinks
'I've blown the diet. There is no point trying to lose weight.' So stops the diet.
Just think
'I've eaten some fatty foods. Ok. Maybe I was being too rigid on the diet. I'll have the occasional treat. This is going to make me more determined than ever to become healthier and lose some weight'.
