Just realising how much we are magnifying our problems can really help and is a great start.
We can make our problems less important by repeatedly making the effort to put our attention on something else, even if we find that is difficult to do.
If we do this we can stop the 'what if' thinking from starting and making the problems feel worse.
Another way of stopping 'what if'.... worries is to start using and thinking the words...…...'So what'. 'So what' is the antidote to 'what if' thinking.
It is also a good way to prevent our.... 'what ifs'.... turning' into 'fortune telling' predictions, which are worries not facts.
By doing these things we'll be able to put our problems into perspective.
