If you answered “true” or “fairly true” to many of the statements on the Sensitive Temperament Questionnaire – click here, there’s a strong likelihood that you are sensitive or highly sensitive.
And if you’re sensitive, you’re also more likely to experience mind-body conditions—not because something is wrong with you, but because of how your finely tuned nervous system processes life.
Common Sensitive Traits Linked to Mind-Body Pain
Sensitive individuals often share the following patterns, which create inner tension:
People pleasing – A tendency to put others first, even at great personal cost.
Perfectionism – Setting unrealistically high standards and being harshly self-critical.
Over-identifying with being “good” – Suppressing shadow traits like anger.
Excessive responsibility – Feeling you must always do the right thing, even taking responsibility for others’ emotions.
Low self-worth and persistent fear – These amplify the patterns above, and often result in emotional repression.
When these traits operate together, they can lead to Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) or other mind-body conditions, where emotional stress manifests as physical pain or illness.

What Helped Me Heal
I’ve personally experienced a lot of these conditions: from digestive problems in my youth to back pain, anxiety and later chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. It has been a long and often painful journey — but it’s also what led me to discover the powerful link between sensitivity, suppressed emotion, and physical symptoms.
One of the biggest turning points in my healing came through the work of Dr. John Sarno and his theory of Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS).
As a Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, Dr. Sarno reviewed thousands of imaging scans (MRI, X-ray, etc.) and found little correlation between structural abnormalities (like herniated discs or degeneration) and reported pain. In contrast, certain personality traits—like those common in sensitive people—correlated far more consistently with chronic pain.
Dr. Sarno believed that chronic physical symptoms, especially back, neck, and joint pain (and also other issues), often stem from repressed emotional problems—primarily anger.
“The pain is a distraction created by the brain to keep you from feeling difficult emotions.”
— Dr. John Sarno

Modern Understanding: The Body as a Messenger
Recent research has expanded on Sarno’s ideas:
More than just anger: Emotions like grief, fear, shame, and helplessness can also trigger symptoms.
Pain as a neural habit: Chronic pain can become a learned brain pattern, even when no physical issue remains.
Sensitivity & nervous system overdrive: For HSPs (Highly Sensitive Persons), the nervous system often stays stuck in fight-flight-freeze, preventing rest and healing.
The present moment matters: While past trauma plays a role, it’s often what we’re doing now—especially inner patterns of fear, repression, and control—that perpetuate the cycle.

Sensitive People & Healing the Mind-Body Split
Understanding is the first step. When you realise:
That you’re not broken
That your pain is real, but not dangerous
That your nervous system is trying to protect you from unbearable emotions
…you can begin to gently shift the patterns causing suffering.
Insight alone can sometimes dissolve symptoms. Many HSPs describe near instant relief just from understanding the real cause of their pain.
And when insight isn’t enough, there are many powerful practices that can help: nervous system regulation, healing in deep relaxation, energy work and much more…

Final Thoughts (for this section)
If you’re a sensitive soul with mind-body pain, you’re not alone—and you’re not stuck. You’re likely carrying more emotion, tension, and responsibility than most people, and your system may have never learned how to safely let go.
But with awareness, the right perspective, and compassionate tools, you can begin to experience what so many others have: freedom, relief, and the discovery that your sensitivity is not your weakness—it’s the key to your healing.
