Labelling

Cognitive Therapy Course – – – Site Overview

With labelling we take a negative mood, emotion or behaviour and then put a label on ourselves.

We make a couple of mistakes and call ourselves a failure.

We cause ourselves much more pain by taking the mistake and making it part of our identity.

By calling ourselves a failure it suggests that we are always going to fail because that is who we are.

If we are struggling with anxiety and low mood and say or think, ‘I am a hopeless person’…. we have turned a passing state and mood into a permanent label of who we are.

Correcting a mistake or a behaviour is much easier than changing our identity.

It is really important to separate what we do… from who we are.
