The next attitude is present focus.
When we’re suffering from anxiety, we go into our heads. It’s very easy to become lost in our thoughts.
Usually we’re thinking about the future — all those what-ifs — although we can also find ourselves going over and over things from the past.
Our imagination can run riot.
One way we can change this is by bringing our attention back to the present moment.
The first step is awareness.
We notice that we’ve become lost in our thoughts.
And then, rather than continuing to follow them, we gently bring our attention back to what’s happening right now.
A really simple way of doing this is through our senses.
Ask yourself:
What can I see?
What can I hear?
What can I feel? — your feet on the ground, your body sitting in the chair, or whatever you’re doing at that moment. Or just become aware of your breathing.
Our senses bring us back into our immediate experience.
Your mind will wander again. That’s absolutely fine.
When you notice it, don’t fight with it. Simply bring your attention gently back to your senses and to whatever you’re doing.
And then, when it wanders again, bring it back again.
Awareness — and then present focus.
